Every home in Britain could be fitted with a smart meter by 2020.
The smart meter lets consumers keep an eye on how much energy they use and allows energy companies to remotely record consumption.
Planned to cost £7 billion the smart meters will enable household to assess how much energy they are using.
Suppliers can work out bills without having to send out meter readers or make estimate of how much electricity or gas has been used.
Hopefully energy use will decrease, fuel bills will drop and CO2 emissions will be reduced.
Friends of the Earth executive director Andy Atkins said: "If we're going to maximise the potential for householders to generate their own renewable energy and help people cut their energy costs, then smart meters have a crucial role to play.
"But this initiative needs greater urgency - and must be part of a green energy revolution."
